Layers of Ridiculousness: Navigating Minimum Wage Rules

We know how fun California can be for our clients — that helps keep us in business! All kidding aside, effective Jan. 1, 2022, the California minimum wage increased to $15 an hour for businesses with 26 or more employees, and $14 for those with fewer workers. Many Bay Area cities enacted ordinances boosting their minimum wage even more, Annie Sciacca reported in The Mercury News.

While these rules don’t affect companies that only hire exempt, salaried employees, there are many important factors around ensuring compliance with the changing wage rules. For example, did you know minimum wage is determined by where the work is performed — not necessarily where a company is headquartered? With an abundance of employees working from home or in multiple locations during these crazy times, the calculations have become more complicated.
